How to locate bankruptcy records in Ohio

 

It is always to good to know your own the financial history and that of the company or individual who might be your next business partner. 


The National Archives is a great place to start looking for Ohio bankruptcy records.  There you can obtain bankruptcy court cases.  Begin by visiting the National Archives’ web site at http://www.archives.gov/research/court-records/bankruptcy.html.  From there you can request the state in question.  In this case it will be Ohio.  Click on Ohio and you are on your way.  Scroll down and view the “Bankruptcy and Court Records.”  You may either visit the Federal court in person or request a copy of the bankruptcy court case online or through the mail from the NARA’s Great Lake Region in Chicago, IL.  

 


To request a case, you must include the following information in your request:  the city where the court is located, the case file name, the case file number, the transfer number, the agency box number, and the NARA location number.  Then you may schedule an appointment to visit the Chicago facility in person by calling 773-948-9030 between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, or you may order copies online or through the mail.  If ordering through the mail you may down load the request form.  It will specify the necessary information and the cost of the transcripts.  You may pay for the copies with a money order or personal check payable to the National Archives Trust Fund, or by American Express, Discover Card, VISA, or MasterCard.  Make sure you include the account number, expiration date and cardholder’s authorized signature.


If ordering online select the court.  Pick the category.  In this case “Bankruptcy Cass Files.”  Then choose the case you are interested in.  The rest is self-explanatory.
